How To Calculate CWA, Scoring System For Students In Universities, Schools, and Colleges

how to calculate cwa

This guide will help you to know how to calculate your CWA if you are a student of any University, School, or College.

Indeed, every tertiary institution in the world uses a scoring system to assess students’ performance.

At the end of every semester, institutions grade their students based on the marks they obtain from assignments, presentations, class exercises, and attendance.

Remember that the type of grading system used by the school determines how the school calculates students’ performance.

In this regard, some schools use the Weighted Average (WA) system, while others use the Grade Point Average (GPA) system.

So what is the CWA grading system?

What Is CWA Grading System?

CWA stands for Cumulative Weighted Average. Indeed, it is an alternative to the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

Notably, you will get your CWA by dividing the Cumulative Weighted Marks scored by the Cumulative credits for the semester.

Remember that some schools use the trimester system instead of the semester system.

Irrespective of that, the procedure for calculating the CWA is the same.

Now let us find out an example of how to calculate your CWA.

How Is CWA GPA Calculated?

Please follow these steps to Calculate your CWA in any University, School, or College:

  • Firstly, we will get our Weighted Marks by multiplying the percentage marks by the credits for that course or subject.
  • Secondly, we will get our Cumulative Weighted Marks by adding all the Weighted Marks for all the courses or subjects for the semester or period.
  • Thirdly, we get our Cumulative Credits by adding all the credits for all the courses or subjects for the semester or period.
  • Lastly, we will get our Cumulative Weighted Average (CWA) by dividing the Cumulative Weighted Marks by the Cumulative Credits for the semester or period.

The formula for calculating CWA = Cumulative Weighted Marks/Cumulative Hours

CWA Calculation Illustration

For example, this is how we will calculate our CWA with these two subjects:

  • Communication skills and
  • Pharmacy informatics.

In this scenario, this is how we will perform the calculation:

Cumulative Weighted Marks =

3 x 78=234

3 x 88=264

234 + 264 = 498

Cumulative Credits =

3 + 3 = 6

Cumulative Weighted Average (CWA) =

498 / 6 = 83
